VMware ESXi 5.1 – RPC receive loop

By Antti Hurme 17/12/2012 No Comments 1 Min Read

Ever since up updated our environment from 5.0 to 5.1 we’ve been getting errors in our Windows Server 2008 R2 virtual machines that have had VMware tools installed on them. Every few seconds we’ve received an Event ID 1000 with the Warning level on them, which is really frustrating as it floods the log files and it’s really hard to find anything in them.

As it seems, vmware is aware of this bug and they have an KB article about this on the following link  Upgrading to VMware Tools 5.1 causes log spew in the Windows Event Log: Error in the RPC receive loop. In our case we did not have the tools.conf file (located on a Windows Server 2008/Windows Server 2008 R2 VM @ C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Tools) present so this file had to be created and within it, you need the following lines:

[logging]
log = true
vmsvc.level = error
vmsvc.handler = vmx
vmusr.level = error
vmusr.handler = vmx
vmvss.level = error
vmvss.handler = vmx

Once the file has been created, all you need to do is open the services.msc and restart the VMTools service.
